How did I create my first logo?

When doing my work experience with Complete., my first task was to create a logo, including either my name, initials or a symbol of me. With this, I chose to use my initials and added a few things that I feel link to me, such as the colours and the butterfly. Here, I will be telling you everything that was going through my head on day 1 when I was creating my logo.

To begin with, I needed to know what to make it look like: this called for inspiration. Anything could have been used for this, but I mainly focused on using the Canva templates and google as this gave me a wide variety of options. Although I didn’t try it, I think that Pinterest may have been a very good option for inspiration with the wide variety of images and styles. When I had found a few designs that I like, I took small bits from each one and almost put them all together but without copying anything so it was all still my own work. This allowed me to see and experiment with many ideas and styles so I wasn’t just stuck with one idea or nothing at all, and I could develop on my idea until I came to the outcome that I currently have.

The second point I wanted to share about designing my logo was the software I used, since I used the design feature in Canva. Before this week, I had used Canva but never this design part of it so it was new to me but after not even a full day, I already figured out how to use everything that I needed. For example, if you wanted help with a layout, the templates would be a great option since it gives you a font, layout and background and you can change the writing or colours to make it your own. Another feature I liked about Canva is that you can use it to draw with. I found this especially helpful when designing some of my backgrounds since I could draw shapes in any colour with the gradient or eyedropper. Also, if you want images, Canva does already have a few but it is also possible to copy and paste one in from google, which is what I did for a few of my drawing style designs.

Now you may be thinking, how did I actually come up with the design? Well, I can say that it wasn’t just one attempt, but at least four or five designs. Each time, I either started completely from scratch with a whole new design or just added small details and tweaked small things until it looked just right. for example, my first design was a rectangle with flowers and mainly pink, but experimentation allowed me to come to the outcome that is currently on this website. Instead of my name, I felt as if my initials fit the design better and worked when I wanted to use pink and green together. Also, in my design is a small butterfly which I wanted to include as it represents my textiles work (with my first theme of bugs and insects) and the fact that butterflies were my favourite animal when I was younger, so it adds an element of me!

Finally, I wanted to explain the importance of a colour scheme and how I came up with mine. The colours are a lot of the time the thing that people remember the website for and it is what makes you stand out over other websites. You can see that the colours in my logo are light pink and green, which are reflected all of the way through my project. You may be thinking, why pink and green? To me, not only do they look nice together, but it also reflects my textiles work, since my whole sketchbook theme is mainly green and some pink, but I wanted to switch it in this so it was mainly pink and some green. These all allowed a consistent colour scheme through my whole website and was also colours that link into my life too.

Overall, I think that creating this logo was one of the most enjoyable parts of my whole work experience at Complete. I hope you can see how I created my personal logo, and perhaps that it helped you design your own!
